Stass Paraskos - From Larnaca to the Tate Gallery

Stass Paraskos was born in Larnaca in 1933 into a poor peasant family in the village of Anaphotia (Anaphotida). Travelling to Britain in 1953 he went first to London and then the northern English city of Leeds, where he worked as a waiter in a restaurant. The restaurant was popular with the local art students who got to know Stass and encouraged him to join them at the local art school, Leeds College of Art.

There Stass was taught by some of the most significant names in British art education of the time, including Harry Thubron, Tom Hudson and Tom Watt.

It was also in Leeds, in 1966, that Stass was prosecuted by the police over an art exhibition in which he was accused of showing "obscene paintings likely to corrupt" and fined by the courts £5. It made Stass a celebrity, and today he remains the only Cyprus born painter to have work in the prestigious Tate Gallery in London.

In this exhibition we celebrate the work of this son of Larnaca, and the founder of the Cyprus College of Art / Cornaro Institute with a display of his recent paintings.
